For the Love of the Sea

The Northwest Maritime Center is, undoubtedly, the hub for all things nautical and sea-fariing in Port Townsend!  This non-profit organization offers boatbuilding classes, sailing lessons, lectures and even a monthly sea shanty sing-along, but by far the most popular and largest program continues to be the internationally renowned Wooden Boat Festival.

There is a well-stocked collection of maritime books in the library, a Wooden Boat Chandlery and an active boatbuilding shop. All are open to the public year round in the historic Point Hudson district of downtown Port Townsend.

The mission of Northwest Maritime Center is to engage and educate people of all generations in traditional and contemporary maritime life, in a spirit of adventure and discovery. They are an organization that uses powerful maritime experiences to educate, inspire people to adventure, and celebrate maritime culture.

"We do it for our own love of boats, in service to the local community and maritime industry, but mostly because regardless of the subject, the sea is the most powerful teacher we know."
